Land Rover's replacement for the Defender may have monococque chassis, sub-frames and "fake" ruggedness, says a
visitor to the factory. The prototype was spotted by a visitor to the Solihull works who'd strayed off the tour trail and
found himself looking at the concept Defender, from which the artist's impression has been drawn. "It looked like any
other 4x4 - something like a cross between Trooper and Shogun," said the man, who preferred to remain anonymous.
"To my mind, it ditches all the aspects that made Defender great." And a factory worker told LRO that among
off-the-shelf components used will be American Ford petrol engines and Isuzu diesels, independent suspension from
Explorer and plastic bumpers from Maverick. The top section is one piece, preventing the roof from being removed. "The
idea, called the Paill Roof, is all mixed up," said the Land Rover insider. Land Rover press office said details would be
made public early this month: "At the moment, we are being told nothing except the codename, 1.16.18.9.12.A," said a
spokesman.
