There Is some debate as the best
wheels to use on a niva. The
standard rims are 16inch x 5 J rims.
There is a particular wheel offset in
these rims that assists in the steering
geometry and track of the vehicle.
Other rims do not share this offset
and causes heavier steering and
additonal strain on the
wheelbearings.
The standard tyres are a 175R16
size. This is one of the smallest 16
inch tyre and is often difficult to
find. The standard russian lug tyre
are said to be impressive off road
and useless onroad. The best
comination of off and on road in
this size is the Michelin 175R16
M+S tyre although Pirelli and
Continental make a tyre in this size.

On Cossak models a 15 inch 5.5JJ
tyre is also available as standard.
This allows wider tyres and much
greater choice of tyre and
manufacturer
One alternative available to users
wishing to gain some lift and choice
of manufacturers is to use the
standard rim and 205R16 tyres.
These tyres stand nearly 2 inches
taller than the standard 175R16
(one inch lift) and are a very
common size throughout Australia
and overseas (Standard fittment to
Toyota Hilux and many other 4x4s)
The advantage is availability. If you
destroy a tyre in the back of
nowhere you will be able to replace
a 205R16 whereas a 175R16 will
be a special order with at least a
days wait. The disadvantage is that
the bigger tyre changes the rolling
diameter of the tyre by
approximately 10% affecting the
speedo and the overall gearing of
the Niva. This means increased
high speed on made road but
reduced gearing when the going
gets tough. It’s a personal choice
but dependant on the power of the
vehicle and use of the 4x4.
Other rims that fit the standard stud
pattern of the Niva are the Suzuki
Sierra, Vitara, Samuri, Ford F100
(some). These wheels have
different offsets and can affect the
heavieness of steering and can lead
to wheelbearing damage or failure.
