Project to visite EE in summer 2012
Hello,
My name is Nicolas, from France.
I used to travel with a small 4x4 van Saviem TP3
I think visite Estonia in summer 2012 with my wife and 3 kids.
I never go on the Baltic.
I hope make a full tour of your state.
Could you suggest me savage place to visite to appreciate nature / savage
Is there any potential to travel "off road" (dirt road)...
Thanks you very much.
Sorry for my bad english
Regards.

Re: Project to visite EE in summer 2012
Hello Nico and a warm welcome to you!
First things first - in Estonia, majority of countryside roads (at least those of "last mile" type) are gravel roads and some do not tend to be in good/satisfactory condition. If it happens to be a rainy summer, one might find enough adventure on those.
I'm sorry, I do not know your van's capabilities. Does it have diff locks, what not? Winch, hi-lift?
Good news is that in Aegviidu, there is an old artillery range (abandoned) on which one can test his vehicle (talking about softroading on real dirt roads, not some serious type of offroading). About 50 km from Tallinn (capital of Estonia) and publicily accessible.
If you have a Garmin GPS unit, good or even excellent maps are available (topographic maps combined with street/road navigation as well). Also, quite good printed atlas is available at every Statoil gas station (this one is called "Regio Atlas"). This Aegviidu area (not the range itself, but close to that) also offers quite a lot free-to-use camping sites, some even with lakes etc.
What I would suggest personally is to navigate through the outer perimeter of mainland (i.e. skip the islands), taking the smallest roads possible. I've done it on '84 Ford Escort, doable, wouldn't do it with modern 3-series BMW though (or comparable).
Of course, all that depends on your schedule... about a week should be planned for a trip not overrushed.
Also, North-East part of Estonia ("Ida-Virumaa" in local language) would be an experience - mining areas, power plants, adventurous roads and some forest deep enough that most of "normal europeans" may not feel comfortable. That can be fit into the around-the-mainland trip as well, not exceeding the 1-week-limit.
That Aegviidu artilley range is also navigable with those GPS maps (in terms of dirt roads) so do not fear getting lost. If your plans take some more firm shape and dates will be fixed, I'm sure you can find some company from this site as well for a good safari!
If you plan some serious offroading/dirtroading alone, print out some phone numbers of those with capable rigs and willing to help. Just in case. Respective thread in this forum is http://forum.4x4.ee/viewtopic.php?f=5&t=4960 , in Estonian unfortunatley and I wouldn't rely on Google Translate ... But, perhaps some english-speaking dudes chime in here as well and give you some phone numbers to call when in trouble. Depending on your exact plans, that is.
Do let us know about your plans and sure we can come up with more detailed suggestions!

Hello,
Thanks for your answer !
My van is an old french miltary ambulance, build by Saviem (=Renault now) in 1973. 4x4 but no diff locks, no winch. 2 gear ratios (long / short) 9.00x16 tires. obesletes capabilities compared to current vehicles. But enough to travel in nature and savage country.
For example, I have traveled to Romania and Moldova with this truck. Bad roads , and free camping in nature.
Yes i have a garmin GPS, i use it with open street map (on this site http://garmin.openstreetmap.nl/)
I have time, i hope doing a 2 week tour in Estonia.
The old artillery range seen to be interesting
And Ida-Virumaa very interesting to me. Because i dont like to visite country as a traditionnal tourist...
For example, in summer 2011, i visited the Transnitrian Republic (So... with kids, it was a real bad idea, but i did it !)
I'm studying maps, so i will tell you more when i will have more plans !
Regards
Nicolas

Halloo Nicolas!

Tere,
Tänan, Saksa tõlgitud Google on ok.
Trip s'intrègre suures loop saada Eestis:

Ehk läbi Venemaa enklaavi Kaliningradi, kuid ma ei tea, kas mul on viisa, venelased on raske.
Täname teretulnud
Sõprussuhteid.

You can find free camping in Matsi rand. Good place.
Re: Project to visite EE in summer 2012
Nico, your English is more than satisfactory. Google translate, however, is... train wreck (at least regarding Estonian).
We appreciate your efforts on using local language, though.
And yes, if you want suggestions for camping sites etc, do tell us. There are plenty and some of those are very nice.
Regarding your van, I stick with my suggestion about the mainland trip. There are places worth to see in almost every corner of Estonia. If you wish, we can come up with some photos and coordinates, maybe those help throughout the planning phase.
Aegviidu range offers you some entertainment for about half a day. So, do not overemphasize it in your plans.

Hi, from Estonian Land Rover Club!
Here are some suggestion where to stay overnight :
http://www.rmk.ee/subject-headings/for- ... facilities
These places are managed by RMK (State Forest Management Centre) and mostly for free usage.
I you wnat to, we can allso suggest some nice and iteresting places to see and explore.
P.S.
When driving offroad or on small roads in Estonia there are few signs and sentences to remeber.
RIIGIMETS (state forest) - free and public usage, no restriction
RMK (State Forest Management Centre) place or forest managed by state, for puböic usage
ERAMAA (plrivate propery/land) - driveing by owners permit only, but in private forest you can walk at daytime
ERATEE (private road) - not for public usage, there can be eceptions writen below:
"välja arvatud külaline" (for guests only) - as the sign say for owners and guests only
"sõit omal vastutusle" (driveing at youre own risk) - you can use this road, but road can be in bad shape
But if there is owner nearbay, you can allways ask permit to use private road and mostly they give it for you for free.

Hello,
Some news about my project.
I think it's a classic road to visit your land.
I hope star from France 9 july... and stay 3 weeks on Estonia.
I hope visit Saaremaa Island, see some small ports on the Baltic, Tallin and mains naturals parks ; Narva town and Peipous lake ; some medieval castle... And off course, found some 'natural' place to profite of my vehicule for offroad and camp.

Hello!
As Helar mentioned above it is more interesting to include Hiiumaa also. There is ferry line between Saaremaa and Hiiumaa http://www.tuulelaevad.ee/ .
Roads in Estionia are mostly in good conditions and for such trip you don't need serious offroad vehicle
Since most of the land near coast have private owners who don't like that common people drive-thru it's sometimes difficult to find your way thru. And maps sometimes lie!
You can try to read this thread: http://forum.4x4.ee/viewtopic.php?f=3&t=33665
